Biography

Dr. V. (Vidija) Soerdjbalie-Maikoe is a senior Forensic Pathologist of the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) at The Hague, Netherlands. She is experienced in forensic pathology on adults and children, has an academic position as trainer in the field of forensic and clinical autopsies and is the pathologist for quality assurance in forensic pathology and from that point of view manages the quality control system on forensic pathology in the Netherlands Forensic Institute. Her special interest in the field of pediatric forensic pathology resulted in an extensive experience as pathologist and international consultant in investigations on child abuse and neglect, perinatal death and sudden death in infancy and childhood. She has testified as an expert witness on numerous cases and deputy trainer on forensic pathology in the Netherlands Forensic Institute.

Dr. Soerdjbalie-Maikoe is a part-time clinical autopsy pathologist and regular trainer in the field of forensic pathology at the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is a lead trainer in forensic pathology for lawyers, prosecutors, medical doctors, forensic examiners. She is guest-teacher in clinical pathology at the Faculty of Medicine in South America (Suriname) for undergraduate students.

Dr. Soerdjbalie-Maikoe is a graduate of the ‘ Vrije Universiteit’ in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, finished her thesis on prostate cancer at the Leiden University/Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands and trained in general clinical pathology at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She finished her training as Forensic pathologist in the Netherlands Forensic Institute and received her acknowledgement on paediatric pathology at the International Pediatric Pathology Association years later. She is a registered medical doctor in the national register for medical doctors and national register for medical specialists in the Netherlands (BIG/RGS registers and Register of Court Experts, NRGD).

Internationally Dr. Soerdjbalie-Maikoe has been an invited speaker at international conferences and symposia on forensic pathology and forensic pediatric pathology nationally and internationally. She organizes international symposia on forensic pathology She has published papers in peer-reviewed journals, is the author of ‘Forensic postmortem investigation in children’, has contributed to a chapter in the text book ‘Forensic autopsy in children: medical handbook of child abuse’ and is involved in national
