Child abuse and violence: understanding and recognizing some age related behavioral indicators, including red flags in sexual behaviors.
Child maltreatment remains an underreported (and often undetected) problem for several reasons including individual and community variations in what is considered “abuse”. Timely and Accurate identification of children who are suspected victims of abuse can facilitate appropriate evaluation, referral, investigation, and outcomes for these children and their families.
These are important features of efforts to protect children from harm, as well as for determining which children are in need of interventions to reduce associated impairment, including mental health problems. It is therefore helpful for mental health care providers to be aware of the clinical features when suspecting Child Abuse.
In this presentation Dr. Hermans will illustrate some age-related behavioral symptoms usually found in the health care settings. She will also introduce an assessment tool to identify age- related sexual behavior in children and adolescents.
1. describe factors that prompt practitioners to suspect child abuse (red flags).
2. recognize behavioral indicators through a screening approach to assess sexual behavior in children and adolescents.
