Domestic homicide and mentally ill offenders in the Caribbean area

Abstract:

This contribution compares different kinds of (attempted) domestic homicide (filicide, uxoricide and familicide) the situation in which an individual with diminished mental capacity is proposed for forensic mental health treatment. A comparison will be made for serious domestic violence in different jurisdictions. To what extent is it possible and necessary to carry out prevention and court ordered treatment? Recommendations from international and comparative law and cultural psychiatry are taken into consideration in order to fulfil forensic mental health assessment and treatment in the Caribbean area

Objectives:

In this presentation the participant will learn about the possibilities and problems of the criminal law sanction for mentally ill offenders, where the perpetrators after an intensive kind of overall treatment might significantly diminish the risk of recidivism, especially compared with detainees who served many years of imprisonment. This sanction TBS aims to reduce the dangerousness or risk of recidivism. Nevertheless it is a heavy task
