Title:

Child Murder by Parents Treatment in the Aftermath of Tragedy

Educational Goals:

1. Demonstrate sensitivity to extreme emotional pain in patients.
2. Recognize barriers to hearing upsetting topics.
3. Identify two types of altruistic child homicide

Remarks:

This presentation will begin with a brief overview of five types of child murder by parents. The focus of the talk will be how we can help parents who have killed their children cope with the aftermath of the loss of their children and usually their spouse. They must deal with being seen as a ‘pariah’ in correctional, hospital, and community settings. They must cope with reminders of their dead children on birthdays and holidays. They need help in forgiving themselves and allowing them to go on with their lives. As clinicians we must overcome our own feelings about the horror of their crimes in providing treatment for them
